Emergent Themes of Love and Agape in Psilocybin-Facilitated Mystical Experience Research

Friday, November 4, 2016 at 7 PM - 9 PM

CIIS Public Programs & Performances
1453 Mission St,
San Francisco, California 94103

FDA-approved clinical trials at Johns Hopkins University and NYU School of Medicine have evaluated the effects of a psilocybin-facilitated mystical experience with diverse populations including individuals diagnosed with cancer experiencing psycho-spiritual and existential distress-many of these patients at the end of life. Subjective features of a mystical experience include unity, sacredness, transcendence, and a greater connection to deeply felt positive emotions including that of love.

This evening presentation and panel discussion explores the prominent, meaning-making, and transformative experiences of love and agape (spiritual, transcendent, or highest form of selfless love) that frequently emerge in psilocybin sessions. The panel discussion includes background information on psilocybin research and clinical case vignettes on the emergence of love within the psilocybin-facilitated mystical experience and its role in cultivating compassion and promoting healing. This event includes time for panel question and answer period moderated by Janis Phelps, Director of the Center for Psychedelic Therapies and Research.

This event is an educational program of the CIIS Center for Psychedelic Therapies and Research in collaboration with CIIS Public Programs & Performances.

The Art of Fingers Dancing: Dance Workshop (W20)

Thursday, November 3, 2016 at 7:30 PM - 9 PM

Li's Wushu Academy
10268 Bandley Dr, Ste 107-B,
Cupertino, CA 95014

The fingers must be educated; the thumb is born knowing.
 ----- Marc Chagall

Dance therapy is offering numerous benefits for physical, mental, and emotional health. Music itself can be a very powerful tool. It can affect our moods and our state of well-being by triggering memories and other emotional experiences. When dance or any movement is set to music, it can create a stress relieving, joyful and sometimes healing moment for those involved, as well as increasing/releasing endorphins in the brain.

Please join us for the dance movement therapy workshop in Cupertino, where we will explore different attributes of the emotional and physical well-being through set of the creative and fun exercises, mixed with the episodes, filled with free-form dancing.

Main benefits you may expect:

- Getting a good ability to express suppressed emotions
- Establishing a positive and rejuvenating connection with your body
- Improving general physical fitness and gross motor skills development
- Processing internal negative beliefs, improving confidence and self-esteem
- Encourages creativity and imagination
- Connecting others people on emotional level
- Creating a positive life outlook, addressing stressful life events and depressive episodes

Every workshop is different, and the facilitator will follow the flow, adjusting the list of the exercises and free-form dance activities to the created team spirit and atmosphere.

Important notes:

- No partner or previous dancing experience necessary.
- All ages and physical capabilities are welcome. You choose you own level of participation and involvement.
- Please try to be on time, as it is easier to “catch a wave” if you are present from the class beginning.
- Clothing: anything that would let you move freely.
- Shoes: dancing bare-feet is the best, but you can also use soft flat shoes. Please no outdoor shoes on the floor.
- There is plenty of parking near the studio. Follow the GPS guidance, however as soon as you turn to the parking lot from Bandley Drive, you need to drive around the building to find the Li's Wushu Academy Entrance at the back. There are no entrances from the front or sides of the building.

Workshop Facilitator: Tanya Pekker, LMFT

Cost: Recommended donation $15 (cash, at the door).

Ocean of Compassion (Gyalwa Gyatso) Buddhist Center

Meditation has the capacity to maximize our potential by opening our awareness to a heartfelt investigation of compassion. This simple, profound practice has been utilized for over 2500 years. The practice of meditation is a learned skill that allows the individual to explore the mind in the present moment with openness, and curiosity to be with what arises. During this last decade significant medical research has shown this practice to increase attention and focus, foster well-being, and lessen emotional reactivity.

Participants will learn tools to develop clarity of attention that allows grasping, judgment, and fear to fall away. This practice can lead to the cultivation of qualities such as compassion, equanimity, wisdom, and joy. There will be instructions for sitting meditation and walking meditation. We will have time for sharing, community, questions, and answers.

This retreat is appropriate for beginners as well as experienced meditators.

Cost: $45

Meditation and Visualization

Saturday, November 19, 2016 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM (PST)

The Dojo
3435 Cesar Chavez,
San Francisco, CA 94110

The word meditation means something different to many different cultures and religions.
The meditation that I teach is free of any religious practice and I define it as "a devoted time to be present, neutralize, and connect to the earth and cosmos".

Meditation is a tool for calibrating and refreshing your own energy system. The clarity, balance and grounding that we can achieve through a basic meditation practice can be used to deepen our own personal evolution.

It gives us a time to be still, and be at peace, observing everything that is happening within us and around us. Through meditation and visualization we can gain perspective about our emotions, the situations that trigger those emotions, and begin to confront personal issues and challenges that arise through life's many adventures.

Sunday, October 30, 2016 at 5 PM - 9 PM

Yerba Buena Center for the Arts
701 Mission St,
San Francisco, California 94103

The holiday, popularly known as Halloween, is the time of year known to Witches as Samhain. The veil is thin between the worlds of the living and the dead. We gather to remember and honor our ancestors, our Beloved Dead, and all those who have crossed over. As we mourn for those we love who have died since last Samhain, we also mourn the loss and pain suffered by the Earth. Yet even as we grieve, we remember and honor the sacred cycles of life, death, rebirth and regeneration, celebrating the births of our children born this year and our own vital connections to the Earth and each other, in which we in which we ground our hope.

When we dance the Spiral as a community, we remember and honor our own past at the same time that we renew our vision and embrace the future. As with all Reclaiming events, we strive for inclusiveness and diversity. Reclaiming rituals are clean and sober as an act of solidarity for those who are in recovery. Reclaiming rituals are open to folks of all ages, all genders, people of diverse physical abilities, peoples of color, LGBTQ+ folk, Witches, Pagans, those of any faith, atheists, activists, seekers and the curious.

Due to the participatory nature of this event, the audience will be encouraged to stand and navigate the room for the duration of the performance.

Undertaken with specific intent and purpose, we encounter and acquaint ourselves with the Spirits and powerful denizens of these realms- our Allies, Benefactors and Guardians - to learn and partake of the Medicine they have to offer. It is an experience steeped in Spirit, Mystery and Magic.

Ancestral Voice is a preeminent center of healing and learning devoted to the preservation, application and respectful dissemination of traditional Indigenous and shamanic lifeways.

Employing Native wisdom and practices, seekers learn, discover and cultivate ways to live Intentfully, with Awareness, Passion and Freedom in order to be of Service.

Date Night: The Art of Loving Touch

Friday, October 28, 2016 at 7:00 PM – 9:30 PM

2219 Filbert Street
San Francisco, CA 94123

Loving touch isn’t just about having the right technique. It’s a form of communication, and probably one of the most powerful forms available to us in a relationship. Whether it’s a passing affection, a kiss, or sensual lovemaking, loving and intimate touch is all about being present in your body while remaining open and attuned to your partner. Discover this and more at our next DATE NIGHT!

At the end of a very long and tiring day, what’s better than giving and receiving a nourishing back rub from your partner? And don't worry, you don’t need a massage table to make it happen; loving touch can happen anytime, anywhere, and who knows--maybe it can lead to more ;)

In this date night, you will learn:
* Different forms of touch that connect you more intimately with your partner;
* Being mindful of yourself and present with your partner when you’re touching them (a “heartfelt and sensual touch”);
* Specific techniques to help release tension in your partner’s head, neck, back and feet;
* How to massage for healing and relaxation or more for sensual and erotic play.

Together, we will explore how touch is communication, a mindful way of speaking and listening to your partner using all of your senses.  We will be offering various exercises and techniques for making sweet and nourishing contact  that will give each of you a fresh new and playful approach to unwinding together.  Please wear comfortable and loose clothing.

Hosted by Liron Cohen and Gal Szekely of The Couples Center, with guest presenter Jasmine Flanigan, this meetup will offer you a greater ability to communicate lovingly and mindfully through touch. You'll leave with new, tangible skills and techniques towards creating the physical intimacy you desire.

Cost: $70 - $100 /couple
