Sour Mash Hug Band

Sunday, July 7, 2019, 8:00 PM – 10:00 PM

The Back Room
1984 Bonita Avenue
Berkeley, CA

Virtuosic violin meets 1920’s-style swing, hot jazz and Yiddish song. The Sour Mash Hug Band evokes an era that never quite existed.

Featuring original compositions reminiscent of Kurt Weill, Tom Waits, and Danny Elfman, plus a trove of dusty tunes gleaned from old 78s, the Sour Mash will take you on a journey into musical history like no other! Paris in the 30’s, Harlem in the 20’s, New Orleans in the 90’s…who knows where the next song will take you?

Led by violinist and bandleader Mickey Galloway, the band has crisscrossed the country via bike, bus, freight train, and broken-down van, playing at every street corner and dive bar that would have them. This took them to San Francisco, Bellingham, New York and farther afield to Transylvania, Paris and Krakow, and finally to New Orleans, which became their home away from home. Highlights have included performances at the Monterey Jazz Festival, Northwest Folklife, the Disney Museum, Millenaris in Budapest, and Lightning in a Bottle. For over a decade, the band split their time between the rag-tag circus haunts of Oakland and the hot jazz haven where Royal Street meets Frenchman, while spending summers going wherever the music led them.

"An irresistible mix of old-time, gypsy, bluegrass, jazz, Irish, and ragtime." –The San Francisco Chronicle

"Folk Music in the most beautiful sense. They draw from a wide variety of sources, play songs and tunes on an unpredictable lineup of instruments, and make the music their own." – Robert Blake, Subdued String Band Festival Program

“A true treasure of the Bay Area, that has toes tapping and people dancing for miles around.” – San Francisco Bay Times

Ed Johnson & Novo Tempo at St James Park: Free Jazz Concert

Saturday, July 6, 2019 at 6 PM – 8 PM

St James Park
North Second Street,
San Jose, California

It’s summer and that means the SJZ Boom Box is at St. James Park with free music programming. This is one of a series of live performances the Boom Box will be hosting in the park. Bring the family, pull up a chair and enjoy an evening in the park with live music curated by San Jose Jazz.

In addition to live music, San Jose Parks & Recreation will be providing games for all ages.

Ed Johnson tours regularly with his band Novo Tempo which appears as a quintet, quartet and trio.

Novo Tempo came together in 2002 after Ed Johnson recorded and released Over That Wave, an album of original songs with a strong Brazilian and Latin undercurrent. The name Novo Tempo translates from Portuguese into English as meaning “new times.” Ed had been performing a song with the same title by Brazilian songwriter Ivan Lins for some years, and thought that the name captured the sound and vision of this new ensemble. The group subsequently recorded two more albums: "Movimento" (Cumulus, 2004) and "The Other Road" (Cumulus, 2007), both primarily featuring more of Ed’s original Brazilian-inspired compositions. These recordings have garnered wide international and national critical acclaim, and the group’s live performances over the past several years have routinely brought audiences to their feet in enthusiastic response.

Kristen Strom – woodwind
Scott Sorkin – guitar/mandolin

So on a beautiful Saturday afternoon, let's shake the Etch-a-Sketch of our lives by getting out of our heads and into the pure knowing of our bodies, sharing in the wordless realms that heal us, activate us, and fill us with wonder.

>> This Deep Dive will be guided by the gentle heart-opening plant medicine of cacao, and inspired by delicious global beats to take you deeper within yourself and into your shared experience.

Together we will craft a space that nurtures the subtle magic of connection with our glorious tribe, evoking your flow, your expression, and your overflowing gratitude for this wondrous life.

Your own willingness to stretch the edges of your senses, to connect, share and move will take us all further into the unknown..

We are sooo delighted to have ALEKSANDRA opening the space at 1pm with her beautiful soul sounds! She will be looping live vocals and mantras to evoke the heart space and set the energetic container for our time together.

This is single origin Ruk’u’x Ulew cacao grown on an off-grid indigenous farm called Finca Porvenir in Coban, Alta Verapaz, Guatemala. A local Kaqchikel family of women hand-select the beans, then gather to roast them over a wood fire, giving the cacao a unique robust flavour. Slow, Saucy and Sacred: Micro Partner Dance Workshop

Saturday, July 6, 2019 at 1 PM – 7 PM

The Center SF
548 Fillmore St,
San Francisco, California

Join Wren LaFeet and guests for a deep dive into micro dance technique, subtle listening and the cultivation of non-attached pleasure.

Navigating the intimacy of close embrace with respect and honoring of boundaries, responding with instantaneous precision and flowing effortlessly between initiation (lead) and response (follow) will all be addressed in depth. We'll employ Taoist breathing techniques to harness our energy, explore how satisfying simplicity of movement can be and relish the luscious richness available within the pause.

"...the only thing needed for magic to occur is some form of structure and an open mind." - Gene Keys, Richard Rudd

The container of Cocréa has been crafted to support transformation. As such it relies on a delicate interplay of trust and surrender. Whether we're dancing in the polarity of lead and follow, or switching back and forth between these dynamics, there is always an exchange of energy taking place. Our job is to listen deeper than we ever have, to ourselves, to our partner, to the music, to our connection with the earth, and respond with openness - with the fluidity of water - to the changes in the structure within which we dance.

This micro workshop will place an emphasis on how we notice and move with awareness of the saucier sensual energies as they arise within a dance, and to hold these energies in their highest possible light. Our sexual energy is the energy of creation; our vital life force. As such, we will be moving in the realm of the sacred with our dance, and with our touch.

Creating a container imbued with the feeling of safety is my primary concern so that every body can feel comfortable and excited to be exploring and inviting more pleasure in their dance with the Sacred Other.

WREN LAFEET

Wren teaches partner dance internationally and primarily on the west coast of North America as a practice for mindful, authentic living, enlivening communities with his signature modality, Cocréa. He is a celebrated TEDx speaker, featured author in "ReInhabiting the Village" - a comprehensive volume of collected works outlining best practices for building regenerative community, and ardent proponent of pioneering a new renaissance through co-created movement, authentic connection and consensual touch. As a cultural architect, his facilitation aims to aid others to "create themselves as brave spaces" for others to express and embody joy through the synthesis of structured social partner dance, conscious movement, authentic relating, sensuality as spirituality and luscious dance music. Cultivating partnered movement as a form of dance and sense therapy, his practice focuses on trusting our bodies with the music and our partner to catalyze elevating the whole being into higher vibrational states. Dancing professionally off and on since 1999, teaching since 2008, and partner dancing virtually since he was in the womb, Wren's work is deeply influenced by nature, relationship, mindfulness and messing up, and has been praised as "the next evolution of conscious dance."

Cost: $55 - $85 (sliding scale)

Relationship as a Spiritual Practice

Sunday, June 23, 2019 at 10 AM – 4:30 PM

Spirit Rock Meditation Center
5000 Sir Francis Drake Blvd.
Woodacre, CA

Relationship As Spiritual Practice: for Those with and Without Partners

Relationships can be a source of great joy and awakening in which the most difficult challenges are used for growth and for opening the heart. This may sound like a fantasy, yet experience shows us that conscious, loving relations are possible. These relationships are a profound opportunity to take the genuine spiritual journey of letting go of the conditioned self and of opening to the vast heart of compassion. A few essential principles and skills can transform relationships into spiritual practice. In this workshop, we'll share these essential tools through group discussion, experiential exercises and guided meditations.

Open to those with and without partners.

Debra Chamberlin-Taylor has been leading retreats since 1978. In addition to practicing Vipassana, she has been influenced by Dzogchen and Diamond Heart®. She also leads workshops on embodiment of awareness and conscious relationships.

Barrio Manouche: Gypsy Jazz & Flamenco Fusion

Saturday June 22, 2019 at 7 pm to 10 pm

Freight & Salvage
2020 Addison Street
Berkeley, CA

Barrio Manouche is a gypsy jazz & flamenco fusion ensemble based in San Francisco, with musicians from Spain, France, Brazil, California, Quebec and beyond.

The band performs a repertoire of original musical compositions deeply influenced by a range of musical traditions: from the swing of Louis Armstrong and Sidney Bechet, to the hot jazz of Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli, the flamenco & rumba of Paco de Lucía, to the avant-garde sounds of Miles Davis, Ornette Coleman and John Coltrane.

The band is considered one of the Bay Area's biggest rising stars, mesmerizing audiences with their live musical performances that incorporate flamenco dancing and other memorable surprises.

With the release last June of its captivating debut album “Aires de Cambio” ( doubleOone Records), Barrio Manouche returned the national spotlight to the Bay Area’s creatively charged Gypsy jazz scene.

Boasting a singular sound combining the instrumentation and signature rhythms of jazz, flamenco and 1930s Gypsy swing, the seven-piece group introduced a sound that’s both rooted in tradition and utterly cosmopolitan. Founded by Spanish guitarist Javi Jimenez, who was later joined by his brother, percussionist Luis Jimenez, Barrio Manouche kept expanding its concept as new members joined the fun.

Bassist Gary Johnson brought his command of jazz, R&B and hip-hop into the ensemble, while the Francophone world contributed Québécois violinist Magali Sanscartier and French saxophonist Cyril Guiraud, a veteran jazz musician who also produced the album.

“I’ve played with many bands in my career, and this one is fascinating, because we’re creating a sound that doesn’t exist,” Sanscartier says. “The music is written and arranged by Javi, and we’re discovering the sound as we do it.”
