Hayward Russell City Blues Festival 2017

July 8 – 9, 2017 (Saturday – Sunday)

Hayward City Hall Plaza
777 "B" Street
Hayward, CA

This little town of African-American's who migrated here from the deep south was one of the proving grounds for many blues musicians. Russell City, an unincorporated area of Hayward, California is about 12 minutes from the City of Oakland. This community of modest houses and small farms along the bay is now gone.

During it's heyday, Russell City was a down home, known for it's clubs with dirt floors, bootleg electricity and a steady stream of musicians playing a unique style of Delta Blues. During the early part of their careers, artists such as Big Joe Turner and Big Mama Thornton played Texas, Arkansas and Louisiana style blues in Russell City.

West Coast Blues music eventually influenced the traditional sound when horns replaced the harmonica and West Coast Blues was born. Russell City is a landmark on the map of American's contributions to world culture giving Hayward a unique musical legacy reflecting the African-American experience. We are pleased to bring those sounds back through the Hayward-Russell City Blues Festival. The Hayward-Russell City Blues Festival celebrates the rich history, musical and cultural art form found in Russell City and Hayward during the post war years from the 1940's thru the 1960's.

Summer Shadows: 5Rhythms Workshop in San Francisco

July 1 – 2, 2017 (Saturday – Sunday)

The City Waves 5Rhythms
386 Moraga Ave,
San Francisco, California 94129

The 5Rhythms (Flowing, Staccato, Chaos, Lyrical and Stillness) forms a map which gives us the possibility to dance the rhythms in our own life. Each rhythm has a physical gateway into our own energy, into our own dance, and its light and shadow.

The summer sun warms us with its bright light, that also generates dark shadows. Things we like about ourselves, we tend to show and bring to light. Things we dislike, we keep in the shadow not to be seen.

When there is light, shadow is naturally generated. This is when we could make a choice to have integrity within ourselves, acknowledging both so that we could dance with both. These aspects can and should be explored as their discovery will bring us into full appreciation of who we are as a whole, mind body and soul. Exploring the lights and shadows of ourselves and moving through them on the dance floor, give us a chance for transformation. From being frozen to being fluid, from tense to being determined, from lost to being clear, from spaced out to being present, from numbed to being connected with spirit.

“Circling” Intensive Weekend in Emeryville

July 1 – 2, 2017 (Saturday – Sunday)

4 Admiral Drive #424,
Emeryville, CA 94608

Are you living a Life worthy of your Dreams?
- Let's discover how together.
- Be listened to, seen and gotten like you've never been gotten before.
- Create more love, connection and community in your life and the world

We believe this is a practice that can change the way the world relates. But it starts with you! Join us and see for yourself what possibilities emerge.

Reserve Your Spot and see more details here: http://www.circlinginstitute.com/intensive/

What does circling look like in terms of format?

A group of 4-10 people sit in a circle and put their attention primarily on one person, and, with the help of a facilitator, notice what it's like being with this person moment by moment, share impact and observations, and co-explore what that person’s experience and world is like, essentially getting into deep relationship with what is most true and alive for that person.

The experience of “being seen” for who we authentically are is one of the most rewarding experiences we can have as human beings, and Circling teaches us exactly that, how to see and celebrate each person for the unique flavor they bring to the world.

We don’t give advice or try to fix anyone, which can so easily backfire. Rather, we welcome and stay with “what is”, so we can relax into the truth of our experience, feel supported, know we are not alone and allow the experience of this to change us.

Facilitators: Jon Cotton, Guy Sengstock and Circling Institute Facilitators

Tuition: $295- $349

Swingposium: A Tribute to Big Band Music & Dance at Camp

Saturday, June 24, 2017 at 8 PM - 9:30 PM

Wesley United Methodist Church
566 N 5th St,
San Jose, California 95112

San Jose Taiko, Epic Immersive, and Wesley Jazz Ensemble team up to present Swingposium: Big Band Music and Dance at Camp, which brings tribute to Japanese-Americans involved in swing music and dance during WWII Internment Camps.

“Swingposium is essentially a dance as opposed to a concert” says San Jose Taiko Artistic Director Franco Imperial. “The intention is to celebrate the amazing people who, in the midst of being incarcerated, turned to music and dance as a means of survival. We’ve invited Epic Immersive to help craft a dynamic environment for the audience. This is not a typical show where you sit and passively observe.”

Epic Immersive CEO and Founder Steve M. Boyle explains, “Epic Immersive creates immersive theatrical experiences - 360-degree live fictional worlds with stories that run through them. There are storylines like with a movie or a play, but instead of sitting in a seat, guests are part of the experience’s universe. In this case, guests will be transported to a swing dance hall at a WWII internment camp. There they’ll dance, meet new people, be guided through a narrative, and experience from the inside one of the great, beautiful, under-told, and uplifting stories of the Japanese American internment camps.”

An Evening of Kirtan with Madhava!

Friday, June 23, 2017 at 7 PM - 9 PM

Nandi Yoga
309 8th Ave,
San Mateo, California 94401

Embark on a vocal journey through the sacred sounds of ancient India. Drawing from an unbroken tradition of Indian devotional singing, Madhava will introduce and lead us in the ancient practice of "Kirtan" (or chanting), the heart of devotional yoga. This practice of calling to the divine creates a bridge between the individual and the eternal, opening the heart and welcoming the spirit. Sometimes soft and meditative and sometimes loud and wildly rhythmic, Kirtan takes the participant on a deep emotional and musical journey through our mostly unexplored inner world. With solo performance and call-and-response group chanting, Madhava creates a space of invocation, prayer, and heartfelt expression.

No previous experience is needed. This is an exploration of the heart, independent of vocal or musical technique.

Cost: $30
