Camp Blues

September 4-7, 2015 (Friday – Sunday)

Santa Cruz, California

Camp Blues is an educational, recreational, and social weekend for all levels of dance experience. We focus on dances rooted in African movement, seen in the juke joints of the early 1900's, and deeply-grounded in the pulse of blues music. These dances (such as the grind, shuffle, stroll, strut, boogie, and many others) formed the foundation for modern jazz and blues dances.

Have you ever tried learning a new language? It can be a difficult and intimidating process when you find yourself struggling through new words and concepts on your own. It's a lot easier when you learn through immersion--surrounding yourself with the language, picking it up in a fun, social, and supportive context.

At Camp Blues, you learn the language of blues dancing through total immersion. You get to surround yourself with a friendly community of instructors and dancers, in a beautiful setting that allows you to focus your time and energy on your learning, while making friends from around the world who love music and dance as much as you.

Over the course of several days you will grow into your role as a blues and jazz dancer. You will make connections and share experiences with dancers from different backgrounds and skill levels, study with world-class dance instructors, and enjoy practicing your new moves at nightly dance events.

For those new to the camp, or completely new to blues dancing and movement, this is a journey that will completely change your life as a dancer. With activities scheduled from morning until late at night (don't worry, late night activities are optional, so you can get your beauty sleep), Camp Blues is designed to build your confidence and mastery with blues dance, develop your connection to the community, and cultivate friendships that will last for years to come.

Age of Innocence Ball: A Viennese Ball in Old New York

Saturday, September 5, 2015 @ 7pm to 10pm

Alameda Elks Lodge
2255 Santa Clara Ave,
Alameda, CA

Have an elegant time with Old New York's social elite in the world of Edith Wharton's The Age of Innocence.

For costume inspiration, we suggest watching Martin Scorsese's gorgeous film version of The Age of Innocence and reading the sublimely readable original novel. Evening dress from the bustle era (1870's and 80's) or modern evening dress is admired, but not admired. Elegant American "Old Money," brash and brazen "New Money," both British and Continental aristocracy and gentry, and famous performing artists are all welcome at the ball.

But watch your step. There is gossip everywhere. It is the unofficial Old New York competitive sport!

Bangers & Mash plays elegant rotary and Viennese waltzes, polkas, mazurka waltzes, schottisches, a Grand March to end all grand marches, a Lancers Quadrille, and some lively American mixers and contradances (all set dances and contras will be taught and called at the ball and there will be a pre-ball workshop at 7pm) just to reassert our American patriotism as well as our Continental sophistication!  Bangers and Mash's chamber music arrangements of the great Viennese Waltzes of the Strauss family are divine to dance to and they can play down-home American country dance music like masters of the genre!

Cost: $20.00 in advance (by August 29); at the door: $25.00

Love, Sex, and Intimacy

Saturday, September 12, 2015 @ 10am – 6pm

The SUNCENTER for Well Being
One Mirada Road
Half Moon Bay, CA 94019

Workshop for individuals and couples. Intimacy is to the soul as food is to the body. We are nurtured and enriched at the core of our being in the experience of deep connection. When the longing for intimacy is satisfied, we experience wholeness and sufficiency; we are at one with ourselves and the world. In conjunction with a sexual connection, the experience of intimacy can be exhilarating, inspiring, even transcendent.

The shadow side of this connection is the fear of intimacy, which is actually the fear of loss, rejection, shame, or humiliation. These fears are common, even universal, yet their presence need not prevent us from experiencing the joys of intimate contact. It is not so much a matter of eliminating these fears or concerns, but of skillfully responding to them.

How do we maintain an open heart in the face of powerful emotions? How can we redirect and intensify the energy contained within these feelings toward states of heightened awareness? How can we open to the full range of feeling that enters into our experience during these times?

We will address these and other questions that directly relate to our ability to dive fully into the bottomless pool of our heart's truth, and feel love in all its physical, sexual, and spiritual splendor. This course presents ways of understanding and neutralizing patterns that limit intimacy and offer practices to deepen and enhance it. Participants also explore the inner landscape that exists beyond intimacy, that territory of the heart where the deep connection of "two" becomes the transcendent "one."

Cost: $100 if paid by August 28, 2015; $125 after August 28, 2015

Seeing and Understanding Asana

September 12-13, 2015 (Saturday – Sunday)

Iyengar Yoga Institute of San Francisco
2201 Sutter St, San Francisco, California 94115

As practitioners of yoga, we often become perplexed about what we are looking at in our own body when we are in an asana. “It does not look right or feel right, but I am not quite sure what I see or how to change it.” Also sometimes when teaching we observe the students but become bogged down with what we are looking at and what we should choose to teach on.

The object of this workshop is to strengthen your proficiency in interpreting what you see and how that new seeing can bring change in the asana. During this 2-day workshop, the skill of “seeing” will develop through asana practice, observation of self and others, discussing and applying.

On Saturday, we will start with the feet and work upwards.

On Sunday, we will start with the hands and move downward. On both days, the asanas and actions from different groups will be explored. Through this process, practitioners will start to train the eyes and develop the skill of “seeing” leading to refined teaching as well as the ability to easily integrate these improvements into one’s own practice.

All levels are welcome.

Cost: Full weekend, $120 until Sept 5/$160 after; Drop-in: $90 per day

Silence helps us to see ourselves more clearly, to see the course of our thoughts and the currents of our hearts. Together with the techniques of Raja yoga, we have a powerful opportunity to use the energy of our bodies, our breath, our will and our concentration to work our way back to our True Nature.

Silent retreat attendees will receive basic instruction in meditation to explore throughout the retreat, as well as access to structured group meditations, which are encouraged but not mandatory. Yoga postures are led each morning.

Erotic Partnership Retreat

September 25-27, 2015 (Friday – Sunday)
IONS EarthRise Retreat Center,
101 San Antonio Road,
Petaluma, CA 94952

Are you looking for a weekend workshop that will help you improve your relationship overall and lead to a better sex life? Do you want to remember the depth of your love and then take it further?

This retreat starts with emotional connection, offers a structure for how to connect sexually, and will give you tools for staying connected. A weekend of heart-centered sexuality training.
No one weekend makes a relationship. Yet there are seminal times in a relationship that shift the direction or catalyze an important quality. This three-day, two-night retreat will provide understanding, concrete practices, and an opportunity to remember how easy love can be. Our focus will be creating emotionally connected sexuality — being friends, partners and lovers. This is what we call erotic partnership.

We will approach both sexuality and personal transformation scientifically as well as emphasizing romance.

During this retreat, you will:
* take time to clarify intention.
* practice giving and receiving affection.
* move gently from sensuality to sexuality.
* practice effective communication while bridging emotional connection with erotic exploration.

Couples are guided in increasingly intimate private conversations, then offered private "homework" assignments that deepen into the erotic. We help couples plan a special date for the Saturday night of the weekend. This date will offer an opportunity to practice moving through the stuck places in your sexual relationship and to create a template for ongoing transformation.

Cost: with Food and Lodging is $1,200 per couple; with Food only (no lodging) is $975 per couple.

So here we stand at a crucial crossroads between the past and the future, a place where we can make a powerful choice to take what has served us and transform what has not.

Through the Open Floor Movement/Dance Practice, inquiry and experiential exercises, we will give voice to that which lives within us, awakening the wisdom that has been there all along.

All levels of experience welcome (although it is recommended to experience some sort of conscious dance class before this workshop).
