Los Tangueros del Oeste: Intersection of Tango, Flamenco & Hip-Hop

Saturday, November 30, 2019 at 7:30 PM – 10:00 PM PST

Red Poppy Art House
2698 Folsom Street
San Francisco, CA

Steeped in the nuevo tango styles of Astor Piazzolla, Gotan Project, and Bajo Fondo, bassist/composer Sascha Jacobsen’s newest project combines beats and textures from electronica, with influences from flamenco filtered through an improvisational lens.

Featuring:
Sascha Jacobsen – bass
Carlos Caminos – guitar
Seth Asarnow – bandoneon
Ishtar Hernandez – violin

About the Artist:
Hailing from an illustrious musical family dating back at least five generations to a bassist for the Moscow Opera in the early 19th century, Sascha Jacobsen is a bassist who loves expanding on traditional forms. He’s explored his passion for tango in ensembles like the Musical Art Quintet and Trio Garufa, and his latest project, Los Tangueros del Oeste, might be his most adventurous yet. The group features Seth Asarnow on the accordion-like bandoneon, Daniel Riera on analog synthesizer and EWI (electronic wind instrument), and violinist Ishtar Hernandez. Focusing on Jacobsen’s original compositions, the band’s singular nuevo tango sound is cool and impassioned, sensuous, seductive, and utterly dance-inducing.

Cherry Poppin' Daddies @ Slim's

Sunday, November 24, 2019, 7:00 PM PST

Slim's
333 11th Street
San Francisco, CA

In the past few years Cherry Poppin’ Daddies have become the kind of band that you would want to book if you were throwing a soiree at the Gatsby mansion. Penning elegant, lush, pitch perfect arrangements of much of the great American songbook, from Cole Porter to Frank Sinatra, the Daddies have surprised many- likely familiar with them from the early 90’s- whose limited exposure to the band undoubtedly consists of an image of spray painted vans careening across the US as an iconoclastic, misfit part of an already marginalized punk/ska scene.

In fact the Daddies have of late put together a number of excellent swing/ jazz sit down theatre type shows, each tailored to a different era of swing music: a “Jazz Age Lawn Party” consisting of roaring 20’s and Cotton Club Era material, a swanky “Live at the Sands” type tribute to the Rat Pack, and a World War 2 “Christmas Canteen” show that is part Tiki, part Benny Goodman and comes across like a radio broadcast from Guadalcanal circa 1942. The sheer craftsmanship and professional attention to detail of these performances have shed new light on this criminally underestimated band.

On top of being a show band nonpareil, the Daddies have an “oh by the way” double platinum ability to pen original material that, while influenced by a history of American popular music, is wholly modern lyrically, and itself stands up as classic. The 1997 release of Zoot Suit Riot set the bar for the neo-swing movement of the era in terms of originality, lyrical depth, and flat out musical sales.

Singer songwriter/ bandleader Steve Perry puts it this way, “Lately, by laying our hands on the great American songbook, we have been trying to fill in for audiences the historical back story of what inspires our original brand of Americana, because in essence that is what I consider us to be, an Americana band. But instead of taking mostly from a delta blues tradition- like many of the bands labeled “Americana”- we adhere mostly to a pre rock, pre mid 50’s, hot jazz and essentially Tin Pan Alley tradition. Then we attempt to deconstruct and détourne those set of tropes to fit modern themes, be that something like child abuse or say the opioid crisis. It’s unfortunate, but I believe it comforts modern audiences to see that we are able to play, in an orthodox fashion, material that is in the tradition, before they allow us to reach out for something unfamiliar, multifaceted, or god forbid anti-bourgeois in point of view like many of our originals are”

Proximity to home has allowed the Eugene, Oregon band to recently finish a new recording slated for release in late 2018 called Bigger Life. Perry says, “Bigger Life is 14 songs that will allow us to touch base with our punk/ ska audience. We will continue to play the all swing, classy theater type shows that are our bread and butter, but in addition, at some point in 2019 and 2020, we would like to book a few special tours and play occasional festivals where we crank it up and play only ska punk, hopefully joining forces with some of the bands that befriended us as we were all coming up in this business. This new record turned out really special and we are excited for people to get their ears on it.”

Ground In Sound: Acupuncture and Sound Healing

Sunday, November 24, 2019 at 4:30 PM – 6:00 PM PST

San Francisco Buddhist Center
37 Bartlett Street
San Francisco, CA

Let's spend a Sunday afternoon with acupuncture and sound healing together in community!

You are cordially invited to a monthly collaborative session presented by Ground in Sound:

ACUPUNCTURE AND SOUND HEALING
The combination of acupuncture and sound healing amplifies the therapeutic affect of both therapies. The acupuncture needles act as an antenna, receiving and enhancing the healing sound vibrations produced by the vibrational instruments - Planetary gong, Tibetan singing bowls, tuning forks and more. The needles absorb the vibrations deeper into the tissues of the body, creating a ripple of healing energy from the inside out. We will experience an inner balance, calmness, and a sense of deep relaxation that will enable us to journey within, center, and reconnect.

We will start with vocal meditation to tune our bodies. Our voice, the most potent healing instrument, will open our hearts and prepare us to receive acupunture and the vibration of instruments. Once on the mat, we will begin the acupuncture session with meditative and restorative sound journey.

Please bring whatever will make you comfortable while lying down (or sitting). We recommend a yoga mat, pillow, eye mask, blanket, and water bottle. Wear comfortable, loose clothes, in layers.

Doors open at 4pm so please arrive early to set up your spot. We start at 4:30pm. No late entries.

*Limited Capacity.* Please buy a ticket in advance to reserve a spot.

Cost: $40 - $50

Arctic Siberian Sakha performance: ”KUT-SUR” with Olox

Saturday, November 23, 2019 at 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM PST

The Center SF
548 Fillmore Street
San Francisco, CA

In this magical and ceremonial sound and movement journey, Olox invites you to explore the state of your Kut-Sür or "force of the soul" through a combination of traditional songs with modern acoustic and electronic beats. Traditional Arctic sounds of northern birds, animals and the reindeer breath (arctic throat beat-box) combined with vibrant percussion and electronic music will have you dancing all night long! You will also learn the traditional Sakha ”Dance of Pattern” (sacred geometry dance) and northern bird and animal dances. Olox offers a truly unique and new genre of sound that you won't hear anywhere else as they bridge traditional Artic sounds and rituals with new technologies.

Drawing from deep wisdom of the Sakha neoshamans, this Olox sound and movement journey will strengthen, purify and protect your Kut-Sür or “the force of the soul.” According to the tradition of the Sakha people in Siberia, every person is made of three spirits and ether, referred to collectively as Kut-Sür or “the force of the soul.”

“Kut” is the spirit consisting of 3 initial elements: Iye Kut (soul), Buor Kut (body), Salgyn Kut (mind). “Sur” is an ether that holds the three spirits and determines a person’s behavior. The Sakha people believe that when all three Kuts are in balanced and protected, the person is full, happy and healthy. The people of Sakha use sound and dance to purify, strengthen and protect their Kut-Sür.

-Please wear clothing you feel comfortable moving in-

Olox is the creative union between Andreas Jones and Zarina Kopyrina which is a fusion of heart rhythms and electronic sounds mixed with ethnic songs from the native Sakha people from Siberia characterized by animal, bird and deep nature vocals.

Zarina was born in a small village in Sakha (arctic Siberia) and was three years old when she started to learn the language of the birds and animals. Her voice takes its breath from traditional Sakha culture and is truly an instrument. She is the creator of “arctic beatbox” - the reindeer breath and is the author of “Neoshamanic Healing.”

Andreas was born to a Greek-Armenian family of healers and musicians and was four years old the first time he played the drums. He is the creator of a unique drumming technique where one person can become a multi-instrumentalist. His vocals are rooted in ancient Armenian singing (mugham) and Tibetan bon chanting.

Friday, November 22, 2019 at 6:30 PM – 10:30 PM PST

906.World
906 Broadway
San Francisco, CA

“The quality of your life is the quality of your relationships”, to quote Tony Robbins. But how many of us are fully satisfied with our relationships? How many of us experience authentic, deep, and meaningful connections regularly? Have you ever participated in a social event and felt “out of place,” walking away without having had a real feeling of belonging? Have you ever felt like you couldn't connect with others, or convey the essence of who you were? Have you ever felt lonely, even while surrounded by people?

If you’ve felt this way, even sometimes, then please join us to experience our first accelerator for real-life friendships: a facilitated evening of connection, learning, and fun!

This event is designed to jump-start connections and real-life friendships. We’ll practice breaking down the roles we play in connecting as humans, deeply relating to each other through meaningful, vulnerable conversations. We’ll learn about intimacy and vulnerability, and having fun doing it! With some simple facilitated exercises designed to get us past the superficial ways of connecting we often default to, you’ll find yourself likely connecting much more deeply with your conversation partners: feeling seen, appreciated, and having much more of a sense of belonging.

The event is divided into 4 main chunks:
·         A secret ice-breaking game. It’s gonna be fun :)
·         A guided networking session, designed to accelerate connection and intimacy
·         A personal development session, where we get to learn about intimacy, human connection and relationships
·         A final celebration party to debrief, connect and play together! Music, food, drinks will be present as well!

This event is also the access point to Real Social Connections (RSC), our vibrant, intimate, positive online community. This community will be held together by an online group, but the real connections will happen in real life through additional, recurring events.

Diego's Umbrella Plays Pacifica!

Friday, November 22, 2019 at 8 PM – 11 PM

Longboard Margarita Bar
180 Eureka Sq,
Pacifica, California

Diego's Umbrella comes back to Pacifica!

There are two kinds of people in this world: those who love Diego’s Umbrella and those who don’t know them yet. Celebrated as San Francisco’s ambassadors of Gypsy Rock, these world-renowned entertainers have created an irresistible mélange that is entirely their own.

A Diego’s Umbrella show is a singular, ecstatic experience. One concert is all it takes to becoming a believer. Night after night they effortlessly blend eastern European sounds, marching drums, beautiful harmonies and catchy hooks with a showmanship that has all the fire and unpredictability of youth, marked by a chiseled refinement of years of experience on the road.

The group’s uncanny gift for pleasing crowds, from standard clubs to huge festivals such as High Sierra and Outside Lands, has earned them a zealous and ever-expanding following across the United States and Europe. Continuously touring abroad has always fed their aesthetic, and has resulted in incorporating the scales of klezmer, the strings of flamenco, and the energy of punk rock.

Their new material is some of the most exciting to date, tipping a hat to the raucous Croatian dance parties the band played in their early days. With a quest to fulfill and broadcast the true meaning of Gypsy Rock, Diego’s Umbrella continues to tour the world.

Journey Into Trance: 5Rhythms with Jonathan Horan

November 22 - 23, 2019 (Friday – Saturday)

Zaccho Dance Theatre
1777 Yosemite Avenue
San Francisco, CA

“Trance is a tricky place, a place not many understand. It’s a mindful state that only happens when you get out of your way and fall into your true self so deeply that something inside clicks and you are simultaneously being and witnessing yourself. “ -Gabrielle Roth

We all long for a place to call home, a place where we feel totally connected and at peace. But there is no home unless we find it in ourselves. The way home is a journey into trance. Trance is soul food, an injection of spirit that can carry us for days and weeks through subways and supermarkets, head-trips and heartaches.

In trance we move into the bigger picture. And from this vantage point we can see into the dark of our own hearts and let go of all the things that haunt us, relinquish them, turn them over to the Great Spirit. Sometimes, we are moved by the spirit of wolf, sometimes we are moved by the spirit of river or the spirit of fear or father. If we let go it takes us past our ordinary self into our luminous self. Any energy fully embodied can be a gateway.

Every time we hold our breath, we are holding back the Great Spirit and all its awesome power. But it is the very presence of that power we all deeply crave. We crave it because it is a catalyst; it shakes us up, keeps us real. It takes a lot of preparation to let go of being the mover and allow the self to be moved. In a million unspoken ways, we will be tested and rewarded.

Journey Into Trance is devoted to unwinding the mind, moving through specific maps and meditations, teaching us how to more deeply traverse the world of trance. It is also an opportunity to deepen our 5Rhythms practice and connect with its roots.

Jonathan Horan is Gabrielle Roth's son and closest collaborator. He is the Executive Director of her international institute, 5Rhythms Global as well as the Director of The Moving Center School NYC. Jonathan has been immersed in the 5Rhythms practice throughout his life and continues to be a key catalyst in its evolution. He is a member of the core teaching faculty of both training and advanced work and teaches workshops of all levels around the world.

The workshop is conducted in a safe, supportive and confidential environment without nudity. The aim is for nourishment and empowerment in an area that excites and intrigues us and yet the chance for meaningful dialog is missing.

This event is suitable for anyone; individuals and couples. All activities are gentle, safe and fully clothed. If you do attend as a couple you can stay with your partner, or choose to mix with the group,

We have clear boundaries and guidelines, and every activity is optional, which creates a space where you can discover new things about yourself, and enjoy vulnerable communication and other practices.

El Rincón Flamenco - Rock the Stage

Saturday, November 16, 2019 at 8 PM – 9:30 PM

Theatre Flamenco of San Francisco
670 S. Van Ness Ave,
San Francisco, California

ROCK FLAMENCO premier was in May 2019 at San Francisco International Festival

Rock Flamenco is a collaborative project between Theatre Flamenco's Artistic Director Carola Zertuche and musicians coming from different musical backgrounds including Flamenco, Rock & Latin Diaspora music.

Rock Flamenco is inspired by a time in 1970s following the death of Franco. La Movida Madrileña & Rock Andaluz were ascendant in Spanish popular music, including various strands of progressive rock. Until then flamenco had remained separate from the rock music movement, but in the period following the death of the dictator and the relaxing of censorship laws a wave of cross-disciplinary experimentation took place. This initially outraged flamenco purists who saw it as the death knell of the form. But it turned out to be one of the great periods of innovation, transformation and renaissance as flamenco, popular culture and the people of Spain began to experience and experiment with democracy once again.

Theatre Flamenco Artistic Director Carola Zertuche will adapt six compositions of flamenco rock to create a unique Flamenco Performance to pay homage to this pivotal point in Spain’s history.

Mindfulness by Rev. Kinrei Bassis

Mindfulness is the heart of Buddhist training. When we are mindful, we are being still and aware of the present. This means not dwelling on our past or on our future, but bringing our attention to our present activity, whether that is driving, a conversation, cooking, working or watching TV. Most people drift through life, spending much of their time lost in a swirl of speculation and judgments about their past and their future. Then they wonder why their life often seems to lack meaning and strength, but they fail to see that the real, vital connection to our life is through being present and mindful of what we are experiencing right now. The ground of Buddhist spiritual training is the teaching that the heart of Buddha can be found in all activities, in all possible places, and at all times. Sometimes I find myself bored or uninterested in many of the mundane activities of my daily life. Yet when I am willing to let go of my expectations and judgments and be wholeheartedly present, my heart often opens to the deep inherent meaning of whatever I am doing, and gratitude and reverence arise quite naturally.

Mindfulness is more than just being aware of what we are doing; it is also an awareness of what we are thinking and feeling. Mindfulness allows me to be aware when my mind keeps turning down some well-worn karmic rut of worry or fear, inadequacy or pride. I can still spend untold hours, days, or even weeks criticizing myself or justifying myself, blaming myself or blaming others. Yet I never would think of making a conscious decision to spend all that time enveloped in self- criticism or blame. It seems like my thoughts and feelings are out of my control. Sometimes I notice that my whole day has an undercurrent of worry flowing through it. Worry may be telling me that some aspect of my life needs attention, yet the activity of spending the whole day endlessly replaying my fears is a useless waste of my energy and causes me considerable pain. Through the attention of being mindful, I can become aware of how much pain I am causing myself with my worrying. I then can also see that I have been choosing to worry and that I have a choice to let go of my worries and return my awareness to my present activity. Mindfulness allows me to see that I can choose to turn toward something positive like trust rather than worry, choose to forgive rather than blame, choose faith rather than doubt. If I feel despair, it is my choice if I allow myself to turn away from my faith and project a future without hope.

Mindfulness is not just being mindful of what we are doing, it is also being mindful of the Buddhist teachings. An example of this mindfulness is maintaining an awareness of the second of the Four Noble Truths, “The source of suffering is desire and attachment.” This helps by reminding me that the sources of my suffering are not the hard and difficult things happening to me; the true root of my suffering lies in what I am choosing to grasp. When I am making a choice, it is important that I keep an awareness of the Precepts so that I am trying to do what is good. At times, I have a problem with doubt, particularly with a doubt that I cannot really follow the Buddha’s teaching and successfully deal with my karma. Yet when I study the Dharma, I am aware that to doubt myself is really to doubt the Dharma. All beings, including me, are Buddhas. When I look at myself and let go of my self-centered harsh judgments, I can see that I am like everyone else. Buddhism is not for some special people; it provides the real cure for all suffering and is the way to find a peaceful and joyous heart. It helps me to recognize that it is my choice to cling to my doubts rather than let them go and trust the Buddhist teaching that eventually all resistance and obstacles in my heart will dissolve. Mindfulness has freed me to see that the seemingly great difficulties in my life arise from my own choices, and I have the freedom to let them go.

When I was a new to Buddhism, I used to think that I was being mindful in my work by working hard with concentrated mind, but often I was unknowingly creating waves of suffering for myself by forgetting to be mindful of the Dharma. For instance, I can remember working very hard for a week on a construction project and, due to someone else’s innocent mistake, all my work needed to be torn down and redone. Since I was unknowingly caught up in strong feelings of pride and accomplishment, I became angry, critical of others and depressed. One of the purposes of mindfulness is not to get caught up in our momentary goals and desires, but to keep our hearts and minds open to a much deeper perspective.

I find the devotional aspect of spiritual life to be a vital part of mindfulness. One reason I find it very difficult to be mindful is often I do not care about what I am doingÑI am just trying to get through some activity so I can get to what I feel is the meaningful part of my life. When we view mindfulness as a mere technique, it is hard to be motivated to let go of our dreams and fears so we can simply be fully aware of our seemingly boring present. Yet when I cut my life in pieces and decide this piece is the one that counts and this piece does not matter, my whole life starts to lose its meaning. It is like people trying to get through their work week so they can live their real life on the weekend. Mindfulness generates profound meaning in our life when we act in faith that our whole life is the life of Buddha. Everything is part of the Buddha, and when we are willing to give our attention and respect to whatever we do, we open ourselves to experience the deep spiritual meaning of each of our actions. Being devotional in daily life means we try to treat each of our activities with reverence and gratitude. When we express reverence and gratitude for what we are being given, we are helping ourselves to awaken to the deeply spiritual significance of our seemingly ordinary lives. A key aspect of Buddhist training is that we need to turn our hearts toward the Buddha instead of allowing all our longing to be directed toward the ephemeral aspects of the world. Mindfulness allows us to see where we are directing our desires and longing, and when we use the awareness of our mindfulness to cultivate our devotion, this helps all our longing flow toward its rightful home.

Buddhism points us toward our most fundamental need and desire: to experience and live from the Heart of Buddha. When we orient our life toward that deep spiritual purpose, then we can gradually free ourselves from getting so emotionally caught up in the varied scenery of our lives. Mindfulness is pointing us toward trying to see everything in our lives as just passing through the mirror of our minds, and it is spiritually important to be willing to let everything go. When our hearts and minds move from this meditative place, then we get caught up in our endless series of goals and desires, fears and worries. The willingness to be mindful, to live from the still heart of meditation, allows all our scattered goals and desires to flow back into our deepest and most heartfelt desire: to awaken to the living heart of Buddha. Mindfulness allows us to see that we are always free to choose to walk in the footsteps of the Buddha.
