Rupa & the April Fishes

Friday, October 4, 2019, at 9:00 PM – 11:30 PM

The New Parish
1743 San Pablo Ave
Oakland, CA

Rupa and the April Fishes create a sound that pulsates with the pluralism of Bay Area culture, celebrating life and the art of resistance through a wide musical palette that pulls from over a decade of playing street parties, festivals and symphonic concerts through 29 countries with songs in 5 languages. Under the direction of composer, frontwoman, activist and physician Rupa, the band creates a live experience which is a manifestation of a world beyond nations, where the heart of humanity beats louder than anything that divides us. This is Liberation Music.

The group's first album eXtraOrdinary rendition (2007) examines love and loss from many angles, with lyrics mostly in French; the second Este Mundo (2009) follows their journey from Tijuana to Texas, tracing the plight of migrants crossing borders, largely in Spanish; the twelve songs of BUILD (2012) examine the road from solitude to solidarity in both directions and arise from a particularly tender moment of global awakening—from the collapse of capitalism and false democracies to the rise of populist movements around the world. Their LIVE at the Independent (2013) album was produced at the request of fans and has become a historic document at the center of a lawsuit which liberated "Happy Birthday To You" back to the commons where it belongs. Their most recent release OVAL (2015) is a luscious collection of string quartet Rupa's most intimate love songs arranged by composer Mark Orton for Quartet San Francisco.

In April 2019, the group released its sixth album Growing Upward in a plastic-free, plantable format--as a set of 12 seed packets. These songs come from a time of Rupa's deep engagement as a physician in places where the social underpinnings of what ails us becomes starkly clear, working closely with groups struggling for dignity, health and sovereignty in a time of climate catastrophe. Laced with love, optimism and unflinching analysis and inspired by direct conversations with Gil Scott Heron, families who have lost their loved ones to police violence and the indigenous grandmothers at Standing Rock, this album is a document of where we are today and where we can focus our gaze in order to rise to the challenges that face us on planet earth. The album features artwork by a longtime collaborator, the art-ivist and muralist, Mona Caron.

The band consists of drummer Aaron Kierbel, cellist Misha Khalikulov, trumpeter Mario Alberto Silva, electronics artist/duduk player JHNO, bassist Daniel Fabricant, violinist Matt Szemela and guitarist/vocalist Rupa.

Cost: $22 - $28

Corazon Tango: Discovering Argentine Tango Music

Saturday, September 28, 2019 at 7:30 PM – 10 PM

Red Poppy Art House
2698 Folsom Street @ 23rd Street,
San Francisco, California

Corazon Tango presents traditional and contemporary Argentine tango pieces arranged by world-renowned maestros from the mid-twentieth century to the present. The program will include a variety of solo, duo, trio, and quartet arrangements.

All the Corazon members are graduates from prestigious Tango orchestra, La orquesta escuela de tango, Emilio Balcarce which directed and taught by the legendary maestros.

Guest artist, Maximiliano Larrea, is native Argentine who is highly trained tango and folklore guitarist, arranger and composer from Conservatorio De Manuel de Falla.

About Corazon Tango,
Main members of Corazon Tango were all born in S. Korea, however they spent their early adulthood in 3 separate cities such as San Francisco (Sumi Lee, Pianist), Buenos Aires (Hanel Yeon, Bandoneonist) and Seoul (YoonHo Jeong, Bassist). Love of Tango music put us together in Buenos Aires through one of the most prestigious & competitive Tango orchestra schools in the world, “La orquesta escuela de tango, Emilio Balcarce” in 2017. Since then the rest is history.
They all have very similar tango training, theater performance track records in Buenos Aires under the same maestros who taught us everything about Tango such as Maestro Victor Lavallen and Maestro Roberto Alvarez (Color Tango), who were the Osvaldo Pugliese’s bandoneonist and arranger.  Maestro Jose Colangeolo, who was the Anibal Troilo’s last pianist, etc... (More details on www.sumilee.com)

Argentine Tango Music changed their lives profoundly. Their desire to study and perform Tango music, made them to move and live in Buenos Aires for years and a decade. After years of assimilation and absorbing the knowledge of Tango Music, they now want to share and give back to the people in their own communities and the world.

Their founding members are three, however, they often invite local and visiting artists to collaborate as a Quartet, Quintet and etc. And, they are planning to perform throughout the state and Asia coming years.

Corazon Tango is seeking for the sponsorships, patrons and various kinds of support to lay the stage on which their creativity can be expressed and shared. Please contact them if you are interested in booking and contributing. They are located in the Bay Area & Seoul, S. Korea.

- Extra note, when Sumi Lee returned to Bay Area from Argentina, she realized that the public gets limited exposure to performing artists of diverse cultures, especially in the fields of non-popular music such as Argentine Tango, and musicians do not receive sufficient support unless they have established a name for themselves already. This problem can be further exacerbated if the artists performs a culturally unique genre that is yet to be known to the masses. She believes in cultural diversity and equal opportunity for all art forms, and she is enthused about supporting talented local and visiting guest artists from all around the world to provide local audiences with diverse music programs in high quality, live performances. She organizes live tango music performances in Bay Area via Golden Gate Int’l Artists.

FEATURING:
Sumi Lee - piano
YoonHo Jeong - contrabass
Hanel Yeon - bandoneon
Maximiliano Larrea (guest artist) – guitar

Cost: $25 – $30

The Hot Club of Cowtown

Sunday, September 29, 2019, 7:00 PM PDT

The Sofia
2700 Capitol Ave
Sacramento, CA

In 2015 the Hot Club of Cowtown was named Western Swing Group of the Year at the Ameripolitan Music Awards.

About this Event

“This trio’s stylistic genesis–as well as title–stems from the realization that the great heritage of strings (guitars and violins) originates mutually with the Manouche gypsies of France and the no-less virtuosic hillbilly pickers and fiddlers of Oklahoma and Texas….

Together for over 15 years and a dozen albums, the threesome of high-heeled violinist Elana James, guitarist Whit Smith and bassist Jake Erwin showed from the beginning that jazz and country music could exist together on the same page, a highly commendable achievement if ever there was one.” – Wall Street Journal
