Butoh with Hiroko Tamano

Sunday, December 11, 2016 at 1 PM - 4 PM

Berkeley Art Center
1275 Walnut St,
Berkeley, California 94709

Butoh is a performance art rooted in Japanese culture and imagination. Hiroko guides the class through visual imaginations that are realized through movement. Whether you practice dance or healing arts this workshop is sure to be an enriching and memorable experience. Hiroko Tamano is a direct student of Butoh founder, Hijikata Tatsumi. Therefore, she provides us with rare access to the original spirit and methodology of Butoh.

No experience required.

Butoh (舞踏 Butō?) is a form of Japanese dance theatre that encompasses a diverse range of activities, techniques and motivations for dance, performance, or movement. Following World War II, butoh arose in 1959 through collaborations between its two key founders Hijikata Tatsumi and Ohno Kazuo. The art form is known to "resist fixity" and be difficult to define; notably, founder Hijikata Tatsumi viewed the formalisation of butoh with "distress". Common features of the art form include playful and grotesque imagery, taboo topics, extreme or absurd environments, and it is traditionally performed in white body makeup with slow hyper-controlled motion. However, with time butoh groups are increasingly being formed around the world, with their various aesthetic ideals and intentions.

Cost: $30

Cosmic Dance in Santa Cruz

Saturday, December 10, 2016 at 8 pm-10 pm

Pacific Cultural Center
1307 Seabright Ave,
Santa Cruz, California 95062

We dance and move and breathe to feel the Cosmic pranic life force swirling within us - we laugh and play and pray to know our connection to all that is.

DJ Moody Shapes has a passion for music that inspires ecstatic movement. He is always looking for the unique sonic gems that give a sense of permission to move in ways you may have never moved before, to light up the dance floor with the joy of discovery and the unexpected. Drawing from the freshest of world and electronic music, his sets span an eclectic swath of tempos and genres, taking dancers on an adventurous journey of freeform expression.

Brynne Flidais of Moveintuit brings Cosmic knowledge to the dance floor. Just as the moon’s force pulls the ocean’s tides, our bodies are influenced by the movements of celestial spheres. Blending our dance with Cosmic wisdom facilitates a deeper understanding of our physical, emotional, and spiritual selves. May we heed the lessons of the planets as we make manifest our soul’s purpose.

Cost: $10 - $15

Restore, Renew, and Rejuvenate: Seasonal Wellness Workshop

Saturday, December 10, 2016 at 1:30 PM – 3:30 PM PST

Bend Yoga Studio
1935 Hayes Street
San Francisco, CA 94117

Learn how to take better care of your body during the busy holiday season through a balanced approach from Yoga and Chinese Medicine perspectives. This winter workshop includes:
ü  Restorative/Yin yoga with light massage
ü  A balancing ear acupuncture treatment
ü  TCM seasonal nutrition and lifestyle tips

Connecting these healing modalities will help bring you to a whole new level of rejuvenation, balance and overall well-being. A perfect way to relax before entering the stress of the holidays!

While culturally Winter is often a time of joy and celebration, in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), it is more appropriately a time for slowing down, reflection and processing our fears, sadness and grief. We can see the synchronicity of this in nature as we witness the cycle of life of the plants around us becoming dormant, in preparation for the birth of Spring. It is important to acknowledge our natural ties to the earth as our home and to honor our physical, mental, emotional, and even spiritual needs to be in harmony with the seasons.

Yin Yoga is a slow, steady, and often stationary practice, holding poses for several minutes at a time. It is a style of yoga that allows us to draw the attention inward, to heal and fully inhabit ourselves as we cultivate attentiveness, softness and kindness toward ourselves and others.

In this workshop, Courtney will be working with ear acupuncture points. In TCM, the ear represents a microsystem of the human body, and is used for treatment of health conditions and to target the healing of specific areas of the body. Participants will receive a basic treatment while in final resting pose, savasana.

Courtney Maree Reiman is a licensed acupuncturist, certified massage therapist and a registered yoga teacher offering services in San Francisco.

Cost: $35 - $40

Rhythmix Cultural Works,
2513 Blanding Avenue,
Alameda

The Accordion Babes are BACK for a night of squeezebox whimsy featuring Women of the famous Accordion Babes Pinup Calendar. After a short hiatus traveling states and Provinces; evading authorities; accepting marriage proposals; and touring the world—all with accordions in tow. This special show features several “babes” in celebration of the 2017 Accordion Babes Pin-up Calendar/CD—now in its 8th year with new musical releases!

Join us for an evening of seriously fun musical diversity, where the accordion rules the night while crossing musical landscapes as varied as French border towns, Tex-Mex cafes, Absinthe parlors, and Cajun and Rock dance halls. Featuring 4 acts, and 5 Accordionistas, come see how the accordion has evolved in the arms of these seriously talented female-fronted bands.

Accordion Babes Artists:

Tara Linda

Torch singer Tara Linda keeps her heart in the desert and her heels in the city. Armed with button accordion, a sultry voice, and baritone ukulele, Tara fronts both jazz and Americana bands around the Bay, writing original music and touring her favorite places across the American Southwest and the EU. Tara is a Hohner and Lanakai endorsed Artist, and asks you not to hold that against her (Bass, Accordion, Uke, Voice, Percussion)

Jet Black Pearl

Could Nina Hagen and Tom Waits have a secret daughter, born in Caravan Palace, with Björk as a babysitter? This fabulous accordion diva from the port of Amsterdam has performed on more than a thousand stages all over Europe and the USA West Coast while singing, rapping and beat boxing about slugs in love, criminal gurus and hallucinating butterflies.

Hobo Gobbelins / Skylar Fell

Proprietress of the famous SF Accordion Apocalypse Repair Shop (now located in Petaluma, CA), Skylar Fell is the Smokin’ accordionist and singer for the otherworldly jug band The Hobo Gobbelins.

The Hobo Gobbelins incorporate traditional sounds of Americana with Old World charms where freight-train spirituals meet absinthe bars. Emerged from the pulsing art vortex of Oakland, CA, these children of punk rock, rose up to create avant-garde performance art with hobo soul. Onstage they weave a wickedly catchy mixture of ancient pirate curses, orcish vaudeville, and eldritch hobo semaphore into junkyard cabaret (Instrumentation: Banjo, Accordion, Guitar, Vocals).

Whiskey and Women/ Renee de la Prade

This rousing Cajun/Folk/Punk trio Features Three punky women from California who share a passion for American roots music and rock-n-roll. Celtic fiddle tunes, blues, and hell-raising Cajun accordion music all get wrapped up, soaked in whiskey, sprinkled with beautiful harmonies, and delivered with the explosive energy of a Molotov cocktail.

Renee de la Prade: accordion, stomp, vocals
Rosemary Steffy: percussion, fiddle, vocals

R/evolutionary R/elating Weekend Workshop

December 9 –11, 2016 (Friday – Sunday)

Church of Soul
1550 5th St,
Oakland, California 94607

Let’s face it: We all yearn to give and receive love. We want richer relationships, deeper friendships, more closeness and community in our lives. We may sometimes even notice... in quiet moments… that we’re dogged by a nagging sense of loneliness, separateness.

And yet, when we look closely, we find that we, ourselves, are sabotaging the connection we want — with our own defensive conditioning, our old patterns of fear, dependency, and blame...
We find that we are hiding from each other, fighting with each other.

How are we to drop this old, rusty armor so that we may, at last, see each other clearly… hold each other closely?

I want to share with you a way I’ve learned to do just that.

I want to help you, as I have many others all over the world, to:
– Heal close relationships, with full-body forgiveness
– Let go of shame, fear, attachment to approval
– Open-heartedly share yourself and support others to do so
– Be completely and compassionately honest
– Go beyond blame and use conflict creatively
– Ask for everything you want, expanding your ability to give & receive
– Create deeper love, connection & intimacy.

Every workshop is different (depending on who’s in the room and how the spirit is moving), but we’ll work with:

– The real source of suffering – internally, and in relationships.

– True meditation & how to make all of life, especially all the pitfalls potential of intimacy into a powerful meditation.

– How people usually (mis)use conversation to resist life, create more suffering, and stay asleep, unconscious.

– Recovering from our addiction to Dialogs of Distraction..

– The 3 N’s of Conscious Conversation.

– The 3 Languages of R/evolutionary R/elating, and when and how to use them.

– Letting go of our painful attempts to control (ourselves & others).

– Moving beyond all blame (of ourselves & others), beyond "good" and "evil".

– Achieving actual acceptance. and full-body forgiveness (of ourselves & others).

– Learning to truly Love (ourselves & others).

– Learning the Art of Asking for what you want... and offering freely… the healing and nourishing practice of giving & receiving...

I will teach, coach, and facilitate transformational conversation… You will do exercises & practice R/evolutionary R/elating... with each other... in real time...

Cost: $200 - $500 (suggested donation)

Mantra Music Meditation with Vaisesika & Kirtan Connect

Friday, December 9, 2016 at 7:30 PM - 9 PM

"Fantasy Dance" Studio
2584 Leghorn St,
Mountain View, California 94043

Special Guest: A veteran bhakti yogi, life coach and soul-stirring Kirtaneer - Vaisesika Dasa!

This will be our last kirtan night for this year 2016 and we promise to make it a memorable & cherished one for you!

Just like there are yoga postures for the body to relax and strengthen and tone, there are mantras (special sound vibrations found in the ancient yoga texts) that act as a revitalizing tonic for the mind. Using these mantras for meditation brings the mind to rest in a space free from stress and anxiety. The word “mantra” literally means to “free the mind”.

Kirtan is live music mantra meditation, a collective call and response style of music that incorporates Sanskrit mantras, a variety of instruments and our voices! With the potency to relax the body and free the mind, kirtan is one of the most powerful forms of meditation. Anyone can participate and experience the clarity and exquisite happiness that comes from kirtan, regardless of musical talent! So come sit back and relax – or get up and dance – and leave feeling invigorated in body and peaceful at heart.

And to let you know, the evening begins with a Goodness Dinner - made with love and totally vegan!

Plan for the Evening:
7:30 pm to 8:00 pm – Goodness Dinner
8:00 pm to 9:00 pm – Mantra Meditation w/ Vaish

Cost: $8 pre-register or $10 at door
