Anabel Valencia: Mentored by the iconic singer from
Lebrija, Manuel de la Paula, Anabel Valencia is steeped in the particular
styles, rhythms and verses of her family and her hometown. With celebrated
artists such as Miguel Funi, Pedro Bacan, Concha Vargas, Juan el Lebrijano,
Inés Bacán, José Valencia, and Curro Malena, Lebrija is one of the most
important wellsprings of flamenco with a great diversity of singing styles,
united by a rhythmic flavor unique to the region. Anabel began singing as a
child in the holiday zambomba fiestas and later, in her teens she made a hit
record with Rycardo Moreno's crossover group "De Ojana Ná" (2001). By
2008 she had left pop behind and was starting to get noticed as a serious
flamenco singer. That summer she made her debut as a soloist at Lebrija's
Caracolá festival and soon after she was invited to collaborate with her cousin
José Valencia in his concerts and in productions by artists such as Joaquín Grilo
and Niño Jero. She has since been featured twice at Seville's Bienal del Arte
Flamenco, most recently just this last September when she also appeared as a
guest artist in the Fiesta de las Bulerias in Jerez de la Frontera. Bay Area
Flamenco is proud to present Anabel Valencia in her first appearance in the
U.S.
David Sanchez "El Galli": Growing up in Morón
de la Frontera, El Galli was exposed to great Gyspy flamenco artists,
especially those of the Gastoreño family. He went on to sing in tablaos in Seville
and Barcelona such as El Cordobes, Los Gallos and the Arenal. Over the years he
has accompanied some of his generation's greatest flamenco dancers on
international tours and at festivals all over Spain, including Juan de Juan,
Antonio Canales, Farruquito, Andrés Marín, Rafael de Carmen, Jairo Barrull, El
Junco, Alejandro Granados, Pepe Torres, Oscar de los Reyes, Javier Barón,
Manuela Carrasco, Juana Amaya, Cristina Hoyos, Pastora Galván, Adela Campallo,
Fuensanta la Moneta, Rocío Molina, Belen Maya, Mercedes Ruiz and Winy Amaya,
among others. Sánchez has collaborated on CD recordings such as Paco
Fernández’s "Sastipen Tali," Enrique el "Extremeño’s
"Tierra de Barros," and Paco de Amparo's “Moroneando,” as well as on
the DVD "Al Compás De Morón". As a solo artist, "el Galli"
has performed in several festivals including the Bienal de Sevilla the Gazpacho
de Morón and the Festival Flamenco Internacional de Alburquerque in New Mexico.
He appeared at the Bay Area Flamenco Festival • Festival Flamenco Gitano in
2010 with Pepe Torres.
Antonio Núñez "El Pulga": From Chiclana,
outside of Cadiz, El Pulga is the nephew of singer Rancapino. With one of the
most unique voices on today's flamenco scene, he has accompanied dancers such
as Antonio Canales, Manuel Carrasco, Juan de Juan, La Lupi, Rafaela Carrasco,
Concha Jareño and Jose Maya. Also known for his original letras (verses), he
has composed for Miguel Poveda, among others.
Juan Campallo started playing for his brother and sister,
dancers Rafael and Adela Campallo, performing all over Spain, touring the world
from Tokyo to New York and appearing in Festivals such as the Bienal de Sevilla
and Mont-de-Marsan. He has also accompanied many other acclaimed dancers such
as Antonio Molina "El Choro", Pastora Galván, Juana Amaya, Antonio
Canales, Javier Barón, and Merche Esmeralda. In 2007 he was awarded the
prestigious “Bordón Minero” in the Festival de la Unión as most promising young
guitarist and was soon asked to present a solo guitar concert in the Bienal de
Sevilla and other important flamenco festivals in Spain. He has composed the
music for many important productions such as El Choro's "Aviso bayles de
gitanos” and Canales' “Una moneda de dos caras”.
