The Funky Godfather is a world-class 9-piece showband and a tribute to the music of James Brown. It’s fronted by one of the most talented and dynamic performers working the stage today, Cubby Ingram. Character at Play: Authentic Relating Through Dance and Movement

Friday, August 24, 2018 at 7 PM - 9 PM

2336 Channing Way,
Berkeley, CA

What if instead of words we communicate to each other through expressive movement? Would it be more satisfying, exciting or challenging?

This class is for everyone who is interested in exploring movement and dance as a creative way of expressing oneself and relating to others.

It is inspired by two of my favorite practices—dance improvisation and authentic relating. Dance improvisation gives us a physical "language to speak" and authentic relating provides space where honesty, vulnerability, curiosity, acceptance, wiliness to take a risk are welcomed and supported.

Through the structured improv exercises, we will explore different ways of being and experiment with the concepts of desire, raw emotions, power, play and anything else that would feel alive in a moment.

We will dance, improvise, play movement games and enjoy being authentic with our body, touch, and movement. We will practice letting go and react spontaneously to imagery, music, and each other. This will make us feel more connected to ourselves and others, help learn more about our relational patterns and experience being seen, accepted, and self-expressed.

Alexandra Bayeva is a professional dancer and choreographer with a background in ballet, folk, modern, contact improv, social dancing, and acro yoga. Her professional experience includes working with a number of dance-theater companies in New York City and her home country of Belarus, as well as being a dance and gymnastics instructor. For the last four years, Alexandra has been exploring various relational and self-developmental practices: she studied non-violent communication, core energetics, and authentic relating.

In the past year, Alexandra produced two dance theater productions where she experimented with bringing the experience of dance improvisation to the stage.

At the Cotati Accordion Festival the sound stage features a cast of rotating acts who play 45 minutes sets. Musical styles range from traditional Tex-Mex to whacky rock-pop-San Francisco-mischief music. The festival is family friendly wholesome fun!

If you like to dance, there is a separate tent that features polka music and the likes. There is also an "old timer" tent complete with washboard base where festivals goers play their favorite tunes in unison.
Cruise the vendor displays. There are 100's of accordions for sale, music books, and related merchandise.

Center for Creative Living
1460 Koll Circle, Suite C
San Jose, CA

Find your groove in this friendly and supportive drum circle!

Recreational group drumming is a great practice that supports health & well-being. It's transformational: it can uplift your mood, decrease your blood pressure, decrease anxiety, increase your energy, increase your feelings of connection and IT'S JUST PURE FUN!

Help build and become part of this monthly Saturday night drumming community. This is a facilitated event; newcomers are always welcome and will be guided into finding their rhythms while more experienced drummers will have the chance to show us their chops while supporting the group experience. I have plenty of instruments to share (let me know if you need one).

Facilitator: Heather Holland

Cost: $10.00 donation

Upcoming Rhythm Playshop - Express your Creative Musical Self!

Saturday, August 25, 2018 at 9:30 AM to 1:00 PM

Main Street Elementary School
3400 North Main Street
Soquel, CA

Have you ever seen people making music together, you wanted to join in but felt you couldn't because you were never "trained" in making music with others? Well this workshop will dispel the myth that only trained musicians can make awesome music!

Mary is masterful music and rhythm facilitator and she is also offering a mini-playshop to give people the experience of learning how to make music together (hint: it has a lot to do with listening). The playshop stands alone, however if you like what you experience and want to continue with the two-day training, that's an option. Whether you want to attend just the 2.5 hour mini-playshop or go through the whole facilitator training, this is your opportunity to listen, play, learn and laugh. The music teacher at Main Street Elementary opens up her classroom to us to use all of the different instruments - ukuleles, xylophones, drums, etc., and people bring whatever instruments they might want to play or experiment with, i.e., violins, French horns, flutes, but you will also get to play with body rhythm, simple vocal call and response and anything else fun that Mary dreams up (she is endlessly creative!)

Facilitator: Mary Knysh

Cost: $30
