This event will create an atmosphere of healing and
safety so that the emergent imperatives of our deepest selves can power up and
come out to play. Breathwork, Ecstatic Dance, and Group Process will be the
core activities.
Brian, who just completed his doctoral project in Somatic
Psychology, will begin the event by situating it as an ecstatic liminal space
to play and explore. Liminal means "in-between" and is a space
commonly invoked by ritual practices that create an experience of being
in-between where one is and where one has been/is going: a liminal border
between imagination and reality, between soul/spirit and body. Liminal
borderland spaces determine ecstasy, which we understand from its etymological
root as "leaving the limits of one’s individuality".
The first group processes will involve the intention of
leaving the limits of one's individuality behind through the use of simple yet
powerful drama therapy techniques. On the pathway to expressing genuine
ecstasy, blocks will often be encountered and the drama therapy will confront
these blocks through exploring movement, sounding, spontaneous expression, and
embodied witnessing. As is the case with many rituals, a mythical backdrop will
be given to deepen the loosening of personal/ socially constructed identity.
Nadya and Brian will then teach a breathing method to
prepare the body for an ecstatic dance experience, where participants will
continue their journey to music.
