Two Modern Schools of Tantra - Tibetan Buddhism and Ananda Marga

A Conversation between Dada Nabhaniilananda and Dr. Patrick Bangert

In 2017 the two of us discussed this topic and filmed it. (here's the link https://youtu.be/Yf94IzSSOco)

Now, by popular demand we are returning to explore the subject matter more deeply.

The ancient science of Tantra is perhaps the world's most misunderstood spiritual tradition. Popular myth mistakes Tantra for an erotic cult or a form of black magic. The truth is not quite this glamorous, but it is actually far more useful and interesting for Tantra is the original source of yoga, mantra, Taoism, Ayurveda, yantra, chakras, kundalinii, prana and meditation itself.

Tibetan Buddhism is the largest present-day school of Tantra. Ananda Marga, founded by Shrii Shrii Anandamurti in 1955, is a modern revival of Tantra Yoga.

As per Dada Nabhaniilananda:

Dr Bangert has a unique experience of both paths. I met Patrick 20 years ago when he was an 18-year-old physics student at the University College of London. He was already practising Buddhist meditation having started at the age of 12 when he learned martial arts. He learned Ananda Marga meditation and practiced with us for the next 5 years, after which we lost contact as he moved to Germany to study machine learning and mathematics.

Recently I was delighted to reconnect with Patrick when he moved to the SF Bay Area. He told me that after completing his PHD he became active in Tibetan Buddhism, taking a Master’s degree in Buddhist Philosophy and Psychology from the Central University of Tibetan Studies in Varanasi. Then he completed a four-year degree in the Lamrim (graded stage of the path) from Sera Jey Monastic University with HH the Dalai Lama as principal teacher. As a native German, he has acted as interpreter for several Lamas in Germany and Austria.

Our first discussion regarding the similarities and differences between these two great spiritual traditions was so well received that we decided to create a series of conversations exploring this fascinating topic more deeply. I eagerly looking forward to this continuation of that conversation.
