San José City Hall
200 E Santa Clara St,
San Jose, California

The SJZ Boom Box rolls out to San José City Hall Plaza as part of the Global Climate Action Summit in San Francisco, September 12–14. In collaboration with the San José Mayor’s Office and Rock the Bike, San Jose Jazz presents indie/world music band Rupa & the April Fishes in a free concert powered completely by bicycles pedaled by volunteers from the Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition.

The show is part of the Green Arts Festival, the public celebration at the end of a day of invitation-only panel discussions and lectures, “Leading Climate Innovation—The Silicon Valley Way,” an affiliate event of the Global Climate Action Summit. In addition to the performance from 5:15–6:45pm, concert goers can also take in presentations by Ford GoBike and Bird; learn about San José’s climate action plan, the launch of the San José Clean Energy initiative and San José Library’s Maker(Space)Ship; see an art exhibit by the San Jose Museum of Art; and enjoy food and drink from some of San José’s best food trucks.

A sold-out smash at the 2012 SJZ Winter Fest, Rupa & the April Fishes creates a singular sound that runs across genre, culture and form to bring a fresh take on styles as diverse as indie folk, art rock, roots reggae, chanson, cumbia, jazz and politically charged punk. Their high energy, “take no prisoners” live show draws from a decade of concerts, street parties, festivals and symphonic concerts on four continents.

The band’s five albums include eXtraOrdinary rendition, Este Mundo and BUILD. LIVE at the Independent was produced at the request of fans who wanted to capture the wild balance of composition and improvisation that is the hallmark of the band’s performance and has become a historic document at the center of a lawsuit which liberated “Happy Birthday To You” back to the commons, where it belongs. Their latest release, OVAL, is an exquisite collection of string quartet love songs arranged by composer Mark Orton for Quartet San Francisco.

Please note: This event will take place on back side of City Hall rotunda facing towards SJSU.
