San Jose, CA

with Cathy Vartuli, Monique Darling and Peter Petersen

Would you like help turning those fears into wins, and that shame into self-expression?

Would you like that inner self-confidence that makes you stand out?

In this 2 hour workshop, we'll help you switch from fear to confidence, we will give you practice and advise for taking action even when you feel awkward.

Expect frank, vulnerable discussion, sharing about fears, empowering and inspiring information and playful, experiential exercises to help you use what you know and stay true to you as you explore, and step outside your comfort zones to where the magic happens!

Ceremony & Teaching with Emahó

September 7 – 8, 2019 (Saturday – Sunday)

CIIS Public Programs
1453 Mission St,
San Francisco, CA

Emahó teaches how to live with honesty, compassion and a sense of responsibility. His teachings challenge our assumptions, dreams and expectations and encourage us to bring more kindness, love, and understanding into our daily lives.

In this unique, experiential workshop, Emahó shows that it is possible to break the code of conditioning to discover the reality of life as a spirited human being. Rather than presenting teachings based in religion or a spiritual lineage, Emahó explores what it is to be a spirited human being in nature–to begin to awaken to your life and to be more alive within it.

It takes courage and compassion to cut through the complacency of our everyday lives to examine our conditioning. Emahó suggests that you seek simply because you have realized the goodness of life, not because you are desperate, lonely, or hungry–the point at which most of us start searching.

Experience a weekend of Emahó’s warm and beautiful teachings through fire ceremony, lecture, one to one contacts, drumming, and silence.

Emahó is an American Indian who was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He lives with his family in New Mexico and gives seminars and fire ceremonies in Europe and the USA. He has helped many people bring more respect and kindness into their lives – more love, care, and understanding into everything they do.

Healing from the Source

September 3 - 8, 2019 (Tuesday – Sunday)

Vajrapani Institute
19950 Kings Creek Rd
Boulder Creek, CA

Spiritual healing is essential in our lives today.  We all suffer emotional and psychological wounding to some degree. For some, this can shape and influence our lives in ways that may for some be unconscious and for others much more obvious. It is painful to find we are affected by emotional patterns that we are not always able to heal. We may look towards Buddhist practice to help us resolve these problems but often we can put a veneer of spiritual practice over unresolved emotional wounds. How do we heal? How do we bring together our spiritual practice with psychological healing? This is not always obvious. During this retreat we will begin to explore the nature of psychological healing.

Rob will draw on years of experience both as a teacher and psychotherapist to look at how we can begin to shape our Buddhist practice to more directly effect the healing process. In this retreat, Rob will bring together the practices of Mahamudra, Vajrasattva and KumNye in a fresh and creative way to explore the healing process, recognizing that we all have within our nature the Source of our innate health.

Join Rob, a Buddhist practitioner and meditator of many decades and a sought-after teacher around the world, for an experience that opens the heart to our inner selves and gentle ways of seeing ourselves.

Teacher

Rob Preece has been a practicing Tibetan Buddhist for the past 40 years. He was a founding member of Manjushri Institute in the UK and lived there until 1980 when he went into retreat above Dharamsala on the guidance of Lama Yeshe and Lama Zopa Rinpoche. He remained there for the next five years primarily in retreat but with the opportunity to study with a number of eminent lamas including Song Rinpoche, Lati Rinpoche, Gomo Rinpoche and H.H. Dalai Lama. Returning to the west in 1985 he began to train as a psychotherapist at the Centre for Transpersonal Psychology in London,…

Sexual Well-being: The Next Revolution

September 1 – 6, 2019 (Sunday – Saturday)

The Esalen Institute
 55000 Highway 1,
Big Sur, CA

Our culture is sexually unwell. We can see it almost everywhere we look: in politics, entertainment, the educational system and even in our spiritual communities. The time has come for us to wake up, start a new conversation, and move into a new paradigm of truly conscious and evolved sexuality.

A sexually well culture requires being able to skillfully communicate and connect with purpose about sex without checking out or repressing our authentic sexual selves. This workshop offers tools to start your own personal sexual revolution, while also supporting you in becoming an activist for sexual well-being for all. Meditation, writing, partner exercises and group discussion help you let go of what is no longer serving you, open to new possibilities and up-level your own sex life so you can be part of the sexual solution our world needs. Within a safe, secular, consent-based and trauma-informed container, create a new relationship with your sexuality, deepen your capacity for intimacy and connection and begin forging the path to a culture of sexual intelligence and wellness.

This workshop is fully clothed and all touch exercises are non-sexual and optional. Suitable for all gender expression, sexual orientations and relationship styles.

Facilitator: Jessica Graham
Jessica Graham is a spiritual and sexual activist, meditation teacher, author, sex and intimacy guide and filmmaker. She is contributing editor for the blog Deconstructing Yourself, she co-founded The Eastside Mindfulness Collective, founded Wild Awakening, and authored Good Sex: Getting Off without Checking Out.

In the 1940s, Gillespie, with Charlie Parker, became a major figure in the development of bebop and modern jazz. He taught and influenced many other musicians, including trumpeters Miles Davis, Jon Faddis, Fats Navarro, Clifford Brown, Arturo Sandoval, Lee Morgan, Chuck Mangione, and balladeer Johnny Hartman.

Coyote Medicine: A Pathway to Recovery and Health

August 30, 2019 – September 2, 2019 (Friday – Monday)

1440 Multiversity
800 Bethany Drive
Scotts Valley, CA

Coyotes live in the gaps of modern civilization. A wild species growing in population, they survive on wits and adaptability. Similarly, in the shadow of mainstream medicine, traditional cultural healers continue to thrive—helping with ancient expertise those Western medicine fails to comfort, treat, or cure.

Empower your holistic wellness with researcher and healer Lewis Mehl-Madrona, MD, PhD, of Cherokee and Lakota heritage, and Barbara Mainguy, MFA, MA, psychotherapist and director at the Coyote Institute.

Over this experiential weekend:
·         Explore Coyote Healing—a story-focused, embodied, and community-inclusive practice
·         Develop individualized approaches to stress management and reduction
·         Discover the importance of ceremony and ritual practices in modern life, including sweat lodge, sacred pipe, and prayer.

In many global indigenous philosophies, illness arises from a lack of harmony and balance. The pathway to healing is one of integrating mind-body awareness, a special lesson of the trickster archetype. Coyote Medicine integrates traditional and modern healing philosophies with the power of Native North American approaches.

This workshop is for anyone wishing to deepen self-healing, build community, and activate their natural skill set for change and transformation. Together, you will conclude the weekend with a traditional pipe ceremony and burning of prayer ties in offering.

Facilitators: Lewis Mehl-Madrona and Barbara Mainguy

Cost: Various (based on chosen accommodation)

Cacao Medicine Journey

Sunday, August 25, 2019 at 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM PDT

VIBE: Reiki & Meditation Center
300 Valley Street
Sausalito, CA

Cacao medicine journeys are a deeply somatic, dreamlike experience that connect mind-body-spirit-soul, while facilitating an inner sense of calm and renewal, clarity, and inner re-connection.

This beautiful practice honors shamanic tradition and wisdom by calling in the life force energies of the Directions and Elements, Spirit Animals, Star Beings and Ancestors for guidance.

After you drink the cacao, which is pure ceremonial cacao from Guatemala, hand selected and blessed by a shaman for its energetic properties, and sweetened with honey and spices, you deepen into the experience through guided visual meditation, shamanic drumming, Reiki healing and sacred music. Sharing with the group post ceremony, deepens that connection and creates a sense of relationship and community.

This gentle healing journey
  • inspires creativity and improves mental clarity
  • supports inner healing and clears emotional blocks
  • allows access to inner guidance and wisdom
  • facilitates a sense of wholeness and oneness.

How to prepare for ceremony: For optimal effect of the cacao, it's best to fast for 3 hours before and partake lightly of caffeine and dairy for the day. Hydrating with water, before, during and after ceremony, and drinking electrolytes, is advised as cacao is a mild diuretic and detoxifier.

Medication contradictions: Cacao is not recommended for people who are taking heart medication or anti-depressants. If you are taking one of these medications, you are welcome to join us in ceremony without cacao or have a smaller serving.

What we’ll be drinking: A warm cacao elixir of raw ceremonial cacao from Guatemala, blended with cardamom, ginger, a hint of chile pepper and raw honey (if you are vegan and would prefer another sweetener, please let Nicole know).

What to bring: For your journey, bring a yoga mat and blanket to create a cacao cocoon as we lie on the ground for part of ceremony, a bottle of water, and a journal and pen. If you’d like to bring a crystal or mala or other sacred object to have with you or place on the altar, please do.

Intention for ceremony: You may wish to take a moment to reflect on your intention for ceremony It could be a desire for clarity or guidance in your work, life or relationship; inner reconnection and healing; deeper connection with Spirit or your ancestors; or simply ask Mama Cacao for the medicine you most need in this moment. Opening, allowing and receiving are all you need to do….

Metadharma Daylong w/Vincent Horn & Michael Taft

Saturday, August 24, 2019 at 9 AM – 5 PM

SF Dharma Collective
2701 Folsom Street,
San Francisco, California

Is it possible that the many crises of our time really boil down to a crisis of understanding what it means to be human?

There is a traditional Zen koan in which a student asks, “What is the highest, most profound teaching of all the buddhas?” His teacher replied, “An appropriate response.” Clearly, the 21st century is a very different time from Vedic India or Medieval Japan, and the multiple overlapping crises of our day require very different—and perhaps new and unexpected—responses.

Join Vince Horn and Michael Taft for a day of meditation, interpersonal work, teaching, and discussion around what it means to be a human being at this moment in history. This evolving approach, which they call “metadharma,” is an attempt to address the most pressing existential issues of our time—what we might think of as “an appropriate response.”

About your metadharmaticians:

Vincent Horn is part of a new generation of teachers translating age-old wisdom into contemporary code. A computer engineering dropout turned full-time contemplative, Vince spent his 20s co-founding the ground-breaking Buddhist Geeks Podcast, while simultaneously spending a full year, in total, on silent meditation retreats. Vince began teaching in 2010 and has since been authorized in both the pragmatic dharma lineage of Kenneth Folk, as well as by Trudy Goodman, guiding teacher of InsightLA, in the insight meditation tradition.

Vince is currently the President of Buddhist Geeks, a 501(c)3 educational non-profit, where he serves as one of the hosts of the Buddhist Geeks Podcast, the primary facilitator of the Pragmatic Dharma Training, an online program for people who want to accelerate their awakening, and co-leads several in-person meditation retreats each year.  Vince currently lives in North Carolina with his partner of all partners Emily West Horn and their son Zander.

Michael W. Taft is a maverick meditation teacher, bestselling author, and podcaster. As a mindfulness coach, he specializes in secular, science-based mindfulness training in retreats, groups, corporate settings, and one-on-one sessions. Michael is the author of several books, including the bestselling The Mindful Geek, Nondualism: A Brief History of a Timeless Concept, and Ego (which he co-authored), as well as the editor of such books as Hardwiring Happiness by Rick Hanson and The Science of Enlightenment by Shinzen Young.

From Zen temples in Japan to yogi caves in India, Michael has been meditating for over thirty five years and has extensive experience in both Buddhist Vipassana and Hindu Tantric practice. Michael is a senior facilitator in Shinzen Young’s Unified Mindfulness system, and is a teacher of meditation groups around the Bay Area. He currently lives in Oakland, California, and is founding editor of the iconoclastic mindfulness meditation blog and podcast Deconstructing Yourself.

Blindfolded Contact: Surrendering to Our Inner Sight

Saturday, August 24, 2019 at 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM PDT

Finnish Hall Auditorium, Upstairs Meeting Room
1970 Chestnut St
Berkeley, CA

Blindfolded Contact Dance is a safe and gentle experience—great for both beginners and experienced dancers alike. Wearing blindfolds allows dancers to drop the fear and self-judgment that often inhibits spontaneous movement and authentic connection to self and others. These workshops take participants on a journey of somatic self-discovery and non-verbal consent via solo and group exercises before culminating in an hour-long freeform blindfolded jam.

We will open with a short circle addressing boundaries and safety. Please arrive between 6:30-7. This is closed container. Late arrivals will not be admitted and will not receive a refund.

We have a high expectation of personal responsibility and respect regarding consent and boundaries.

Learn more about us and read the code of conduct at http://www.blindfoldedcontact.com/

If you have a blindfold (or something that can be used as one), please bring it. Otherwise we will have some available.

Blackfoot Gypsies, Jeff Cotton's Gin Joint

Friday, Aug 23, 2019, 9:00 PM –  12:00 AM PDT

The Hotel Utah Saloon
500 4th Street
San Francisco, CA

The Blackfoot Gypsies have unleashed a set of original roadhouse rockin' tunes with To the Top, on Plowboy Records. The Nashville, Tennessee based powerhouse quartet demonstrate raucous energy and soul on this collection delivering their take on white-knuckled rock'n'roll.

Across the 15 tracks of To the Top, the Blackfoot Gypsies fuse their influences -- swamp blues cool, downhome hillbilly funk and homegrown punk panache -- into a lean, mean machine invoking such classic musical malcontents as the Rolling Stones, the Faces and Mott the Hoople, while sparking and spitting 21st-century fire. It's the type of record that could only come from a band that learned to rock the old-fashioned way -- one sweaty, full-throttle live performance at a time.

The band's brew of rock, hillbilly and blues began in 2010 when Oregon native, guitarist and singer Matthew Paige moved to Nashville and hooked up with drummer and Music City native Zach Murphy. The pair wanted to form a full band, but the urge to rock could not wait.

"We were doing just what we wanted to do," Paige says, "but making enough noise to fill out the sound was a challenge. I started playing through two amps to make the most sound."

The pair spent the next two years building a reputation through raucous live performances and two self-released EPs, Blackfoot Gypsies (2010) and Dandee Cheeseball (2011), and their first LP, On the Loose (2012). Hard touring followed the album's release as the duo bashed across the US through hard-won club dates. After three years, they were ready to expand their sound.
